Network-based Humanoid Robot project was first launched in Feb. 2004 as one of the IT839 strategies suggested by the Korean Ministry of Information and Communication.
The first version of network-based humanoids, "MAHRU"(male) and "AHRA"(female), were born in March 2005, and recently new models for 2006 have been developed.
These humanoid robots have been developed through the cooperation between Dr. Bum-Jae You in Intelligent Robotics Research Center, Korea Institute of Science and Technology, and Dr. Kyung Shik Roh in Mechatronics Center, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd..
Network-based humanoid robots send images captured by stereo cameras and voice data from a microphone via wireless network to an external server or client computers in the network. Then, the high-performance external server analyzes and processes the images and voice data to return suitable behavior commands to the humanoids. The humanoids say or act properly following the commands.
Until Jan. 2006, MAHRU and AHRA will be improved as a stablewalking humanoid that can recognize and manipulate objects through network-based distributed intelligence and flexible whole-body motion control.
Normally, "Humanoid" means a human-shaped robot, typically consisting of a head, arms, hands, a body, legs, and feet like human beings. It can imitate human's intelligence, behaviors, and interactions, co-works with human beings, and provides useful services to human beings.
